Your Duromatic pressure cooker pays for itself!

We've all heard that cooking in a pressure cooker saves you
time. But how does this time-savings translate into
real energy savings
in dollars and cents? We've put together a sample of some of
the dishes that a typical family might cook in a week.
Remember that
foods cook in about 1/3 the time of conventional methods.
You will notice that some of the most dramatic savings are
the roast pork (or pot roast) at 1 hour and 30 minutes in
the electric oven (you must remember to calculate
preheating), versus cooking the same dish in a pressure
cooker on a gas stove. You save .82 cents every time you
cook that dish. This may not seem like much; but, say you
cook something like this once a week. That comes to $42.64
in yearly savings just for cooking that one dish once a week
in your pressure cooker!

you can save over $325.00 per year when you cook under

Top of the Class
A member of our family and
participant in our family business was honored this week by
Newsweek Magazine as his school was named top high school in
Washington State.
The annual Newsweek magazine survey of education ranks 1,200 top
U.S. public schools and this year named International School in
Bellevue, Washington as number 11 nationwide. Peter
Bang-Knudsen, Jr. is a third year principal of The International
School and has led that school to academic excellence, producing
some of the highest test scores in the Nation for two years in a
row.
Peter’s wife Laura is also a Bellevue School District principal
and has raised her Sammamish High School to one of the top 10%
in the U.S. Laura’s two previous high schools also made the list
and improved their scores after her tenure at each.

Ides of March
Vernal Equinox time here in Seattle
is sort of like Groundhog Day elsewhere. In the Northwest we
figure on about 3 more months of gray, wet weather. That’s one
reason our customers have done so well with AeroGrow
indoor aeroponic gardens. We have six units growing salad greens
and herbs in our showroom; besides improving our winter moods
the gardens provide us with flavorful fresh herb garnishment to
our lunches.. |

We just completed a round of seasonal shows
and are excited about great new products we are adding to our
spring and summer portfolio. In Frankfurt, Germany we previewed
Jura-Capresso’s newest Automatic Coffee Centers.

the Chicago show and two brand new categories. OXO announced the
acquisition of Candela, a clever line of indoor

BEST SALESPERSON AWARD
Sarah Christensen was honored
at the 2006 Jura Global Sales Conference in Lucerne, Switzerland
September 29th and was presented the Leo Award for “Best
Sales Person USA”.
Sarah is a senior Sales Associate at Bang-Knudsen, Inc. Pacific
Market Center in Seattle, the agency represents Jura-Capresso in
the Pacific Northwest. Leo Awards are given every other year to
the top representatives among 350 attendees at Jura’s worldwide
sales conference.
Bang-Knudsen has represented Capresso and Jura since the
inception of Capresso over 12 years ago. A joint venture between
Capresso and Jura sells state of the art Swiss Automatic Coffee
Centers to high-end specialty stores in America. Sarah
Christensen became the top salesperson by traveling to all of
her customer locations and conducting training programs on how
to present and sell the automatic coffee centers which retail
for $800 to $3200.
The Leo Award was presented at a formal dinner gala in Lucerne
by Emanuel Probst, General Manager of Jura and David Shull, Vice
President of Sales for Jura-Capresso U.S.A. The three day “World
of Coffee Global Sales Conference 2006” was held for sales
associates from every market and of 6 invitees from the U.S.A.
sales force, two were from Bang-Knudsen, Seattle: Sarah
Christensen and Carol Colt.

Brands Appoints Bang-Knudsen
Swiss Army
Brands has appointed Bang-Knudsen, Inc. to represent Victorinox
Swiss Army brand lines of fine cutlery to the Pacific Northwest
retail trade.
Victorinox, makers of the Original
Swiss Army Knife has been crafting fine cutlery since the late
1800’s. The cutlery was formerly marketed to professionals under
the R.H. Forschner brand and is now available to home cooking
enthusiasts under the Victorinox brand. This fine cutlery is
hot-drop, hand forged and ice tempered by master craftsmen in
Solingen, Germany exclusively for Victorinox. Final production
takes place in Switzerland, where their famous proprietary sharp
edge and rigid quality control is finished. The resulting
beautifully balanced, perfectly weighed, full tang construction,
an intuitively engineered comfortable handle, a high carbon, no
stain, high polished forged steel blade with an edge that
retains its razor sharpness. The knives are beautifully designed

Frankfurt Ambiente Feb. 06

We visited Germany to attend
two industry trade fairs, Ambiente in Frankfurt and Domotechnica
in Cologne. While there we had a chance to check local
department and specialty stores.
Ambiente is the largest consumer
goods trade show in the World and is frankly overwhelming in
size and content. It is a truly International show with vendors
and buyers from all nations. Europe is the most heavily
represented but Asian presence is growing. American buyers and
vendors are also increasing in attendance. Generally speaking
this is where new designs and fashion colors from Europe are
seen a year or more before they appear in U.S. stores.
Nevertheless European styles and taste don’t always appeal to
Americans. In over 12 large exhibit halls one may view
everything from furniture to jewelry. We concentrate on 3 halls
containing housewares and tabletop products.

Visiting retail stores in German
cities is just as interesting as walking the shows. Kaufhof and
Lorey are two upscale stores in the center of Frankfurt’s
shopping street. Since we are interested in coffee machines we
notice that Automatic Coffee Machines ranging from $700 to
$5,000 get the most prominent display space. This category is
outselling traditional drip coffee makers in Europe. Jura, Saeco
and Nespresso are leading brands, with Jura getting the most
display space. Over 24 different models of this brand alone are
on display and ready to demonstrate at leading stores.
We also spent a
day at Domotechnica in Cologne. This was once the leading
housewares show in Europe but is a shadow of its former self and
frankly not worth the visit any more. Cologne’s spectacular
gothic cathedral is worth a visit to this city as is its museum
of Roman artifacts. |

AeroGrow®
Appoints Bang-Knudsen
AeroGrow® International of Boulder, Colorado has
appointed Bang-Knudsen, Inc. as exclusive manufacturers
representatives for the Pacific Northwest region. AeroGrow®
invented and developed the World’s first aeroponic plant growing
system for in home consumer use. Bang-Knudsen is among the first
representative agencies to present the company’s revolutionary
home growing system to specialty retailers.
Using a method developed by NASA, plants grow indoors faster and
better using a combination of air and water mist to produce
healthy lettuce, herbs, flowers, berries other vegetables
organically inside the home. Epcot Center has a large aeroponic
display as well. Until recently this technology was too
expensive and cumbersome to utilize in homes, but AeroGrow has
developed a system that is both affordable and foolproof.
To be available in Spring of 2006 in leading specialty retail
stores, home units will be shipped with starter seed packets and
organic fertilizer. Once the unit is set up and the container
filled with water, fertilizer and seeds it will grow lettuce and
herbs many times faster than in nature. A specially designed
grow light and timers will simulate night and day conditions and
the right amount of humidity for rapid plant growth.
Home cooks will have a fresh herb or salad garden available for
constant harvesting on their countertop. Fresh herbs like
cilantro and basil may be clipped and re-grown in a constant
cycle. Other crops available in custom designed seed packages

come.
